Haircare ingredients to avoid

During pregnancy, it is generally safe to continue using most haircare products, including shampoos, conditioners, and styling products. However, as a new mother it is important to be conscious of not only what you are eating, but also what you are putting onto your scalp and hair.

It is important not to let this information scare you, but you may want to take another look at that ingredients list and educate yourself to make sure it doesn’t include anything that you should be aware of and avoid during pregnancy.

To help you make the best decisions while pregnant or breastfeeding, here’s a list of the most common ingredients to avoid…

Phthalates
Phthalates are widely used in conventional hair care products, as they provide flexible hold, helps keep hair smooth, as well as helping to further enhance the length that the fragrance lasts. However, despite having not been studied extensively, they are believed to be an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) that can alter hormonal balance.

Parabens
Parabens are a commonly used preservative that help to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria in all kinds of beauty products including shampoos, soaps, deodorants, make-up, and skincare. Although studies have not shown any definitive proof that parabens are harmful to health, the skin (and scalp) can absorb parabens where they enter the bloodstream.

Sulfates
You’ve probably heard many recommendations to steer clear of shampoos and soaps with sulfates, but while Sodium Laureth Sulfate has been proven safe for use, animal studies have shown that this popular surfactant which can be used as a cheaper way to create the lather in shampoos, can cause potential harm to unborn babies.

All WeKind products have been carefully formulated to ensure they are free from Parabens, Phthalates and Sulphates, as well as Silicones and Mineral Oils, to ensure they are safe for use during pregnancy, as well as while nursing. In addition, they have also been engineered to add moisture and strengthen hair follicles at a time when the hair is going through significant changes due hormonal fluctuations.
